Can stomach viruses come back?

I have a three year old son who has been diagnosed 3 times in the last year as having a 'stomach virus' because he gets virulently sick, then it passes pretty quickly with no explanation. He doesn't seem to be picking it up from anyone else. Could it be that he just never got rid of the virus in the first place?

There are a number of different stomach viruses but a cirus may lead to a malabsorption syndrome. The child may have a parasite or an infection. If your child has lost weight or is pale or has ongoing abdominal pain, he may need to see a pediatric gastroenterologist for further evaluation
He could be getting new viral infections causing him the symptoms. After a stomach virus, it can also take the gut about 1-2 weeks to recover.
