As with any surgery complications can arise. With wisdom teeth this can generally relate to nerve damage, problems with healing, problems related to adjacent teeth, or problems with anesthesia. Please discuss this further with your treating oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
Complications can occur with any surgery. As the saying goes, the only minor surgery is someone else's. Extraction of third molars (wisdom teeth) is considered a routine procedure that is performed every day for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. This cannot be said for the average general/restorative dentist. You should generally expect less possibility for complications when treated by a specialist who does this type of surgery daily. In other words, see an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon for third molar surgery. Prior to surgery, all patients are carefully evaluated and should be informed as to the risks, benefits, possible complications, and expected postoperative course.
Complications can occur with any surgery, even with something as routine as wisdom teeth. Generally, the risk of complications is very low, but it can vary depending on the position of the teeth and their difficulty. This is something you should review with your oral surgeon.
