Do dental crowns require anesthesia?

I will get a dental crown. Do dental crowns require anesthesia?

There are many stages to crowns. Local anesthesia could be needed.
Yes. If your tooth is vital you will need anesthesia due to the reduction of the tooth structure by 1/3.

Unless the tooth has had a root canal, it is routine to numb a tooth for a crown preparation. Without local anesthetic, this procedure is very sensitive since it involves removing the outer protective coating (enamel) of the tooth.
If you are having a live, vital tooth (containing a healthy nerve) crowned, then you will likely require local anesthetic or dental freezing to enable comfortable treatment.

To receive a crown, your tooth needs to be shaved slightly to create a "peg". This preparation of your tooth will cause pain in the absence of dental freezing.

If your tooth to be prepared is root canal treated, however, then you may be able to have your tooth preparation and crown install completed comfortably without local anesthetic!
