“Do you get braces before or after jaw surgery?”
I am a 19 year old female. I want to know if you get braces before or after jaw surgery?

Most typically the orthodontic work would start prior to surgery, the surgery would be done 2/3 to 3/4 of the way through and the remainder of the ortho would be completed after surgery. There are some cases where the surgery can be done first, and the ortho following recovery, but those are more limited.
Braces are generally placed prior to surgery, with treatment initially dedicated to aligning and leveling the upper and lower teeth independently. Jaw surgery is then done to align the jaws. There is almost always another course of orthodontic treatment to fine tune things after jaw surgery. Every case is unique, but this is a general pattern we follow. Make certain you see an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon before you begin orthodontic treatment if jaw surgery is being planned so that the surgeon and orthodontist can plan the case properly.

You will need braces both before and after jaw surgery. The braces before surgery is to align the teeth to certain positions so the surgery can proceed then the braces after the surgery is to tighten up all the to the final stable condition.
Usually you need orthodontics prior to surgery to align the teeth so the bite is stable after surgery.
