“Does anesthesia affect diabetes?”
I am a 42 year old female and I have diabetes. I want to know if anesthesia affects diabetes?

Yes, the stress of surgery can raise blood sugars.
No, other than you are unable to respond if your sugar is too high or too low. Fingerstick sugars are checked frequently while you are under anesthesia.
Anesthesia and suegery will temporartily worsen the diabetes. In cases of major sugery or complcated surgery an endocrinologist should participate in the care of the patient
