Neurologist (Pediatric) Questions Eeg (Electroencephalogram)

EEG results

Hi. My son just started having seizures. EEG done says "There are frequent to very frequent at times, low to medium amplitude (up to 66 uV) right temporo central spike or sharp waves, typically maximal at F8/T4/C4 with a field to T6." Can this be a Benign Rolandic Epilepsy?

Hello. That EEG report is not comprehensive enough to determine whether this is Rolandic Epilepsy, but the location is the right one, in and around the temporal lobes. As the name implies, it is a benign type of epilepsy, that we often not even treat pharmacologically. If the seizures happen frequently enough, though, we do treat, since there have been studies showing that left untreated, they can have an impact in a kid's behavior and development. They are often outgrown, so we typically repeat an EEG when the kid has been seizure free for a couple of years. If the EEG is clean, we slowly wean off the antiepileptic drug.
