Going off birth control?

I am 61 years old and have been taking birth control pills for 24 years. I am unable to get a refill. I still have a period. On the last week of pills I have a migraine. What can I take to alleviate the side effects?

At 61, you are at a much higher risk of heart attack, stroke, or DVT on the doses of estrogen in birth control pills.
If you are a candidate for menopausal hormone replacement therapy, you can switch. It's best to be on an estrogen patch, rather than oral estrogen to reduce your risks. Also make sure you are up to date on your pap and mammogram.
A 61 year old woman should be menstruating. An Ob/Gyn provider can switch you to hormone replacement so you do not menstruating.
The headache, during menses, sounds like a condition called menstrual migraine. A health care provider should be able to make and treat that condition.
