High platelets could be a sign of a serious medical problem such as infection, inflammatory disease, trauma, and possibly cancer. The reason that they want you back is to rule out less compromising problem because by them your inflammatory response would be normalized or there is a need to do additional testing to rule out malignancies. Thank you.
1) To see if it is "repeatable" or chronically high.
2) Follow-up testing for a complete blood test (testing for red blood and white blood cells)
3) Further testing, such as a bone marrow aspirate to rule in or rule out a number of proliferations that could be happening in the marrow.
This repeat testing is necessary to see if the elevated platelet count is persistent and should be investigated further. Some times due to variety of reasons platelets may be elevated temporarily and this is a normal response of a body. If they are persistently elevated then the cause for it should be investigated further.
I will no longer be checking this email at the end of June when I leave my position at CNE. For urgent issues please contact the staff at the Affinity Hematology/Oncology Office in Pawtucket. They will have my contact information.
High platelet count can preceded a serious hematologist disorder there are too many variables which preclude listing causes. The prudent approach is a bone marrow examination, a intense physical examination and laboratory testing for causes of thrombocytosis range from transient to serious causes
They need to investigate why the platelets are high.
Platlets help in forming clots. The count is sometimes a little high. It can be high secondary to infection or anemia. If it continues to rise it can be a sign of primary thrombocytosis, a platelet count that is too high and needs treatment by a hematologist.
