How do you treat eye discharge in babies?

My baby has an eye discharge. How do you treat eye discharge in babies?

If there is no trace of white or grey on the cornea (the window at the front of the eye through which you see the colored iris inside the eye), then you can use over-the-counter lubricating drops to flush out the eye. If the discharge is thick and white and the eye is red, then you need to see a pediatric ophthalmologist quickly or at least an emergency room.
This should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. It could be an infection or congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction. For infection antibiotics are prescribed, and for NLD obstruction, often warm compresses and massage along the lower lid adjacent to the nose in a downward direction can help to improve drainage. If this does not help, a short probing procedure is often necessary to clear the obstruction.
