How is sinus tachycardia treated?

I am 60 year old female. I was diagnosed with sinus tachycardia. How is it treated?

1 Answer

Sinus tachycardia is a heart rate of 100 beats per minute or above, at rest. There are many causes, and the treatment depends on the cause. Things such as infection, medications, chronic illnesses, dehydration, diets, smoking, alcohol, changes in temperature, can all be causes. If the offending cause can be identified, then eliminating it will be the cure. If the tachycardia is from no apparent cause, it may be called inappropriate sinus tachycardia. Different treatments can be useful, such as metoprolol, or another drug in the same class. Rarely, invasive procedures such as catheter ablation are needed. Identifying the cause is paramount. Start with a complete blood count to rule out anemia, electrolytes and glucose to rule out a metabolic problem, and a thyroid panel to rule out hyperthyroidism. A urine test will rule out a urinary tract infection, and possible kidney infection. IN the meantime, stay well hydrated, with water.
