The recommendations for when to return to normal exercising is based on the individual surgeons preference. Most surgeons, recommend waiting anywhere for 3 to 6 weeks to allow the tissues of chance to heal and a minimize a chance of recurrence.
In general a period of 4-6 weeks of no heavy lifting greater than 15-20lbs after surgery is the recommendation. This is to avoid pressure on the repair. Smaller hernias may be less time. Larger hernias may require longer restrictions.
Post op instructions are tailored to the procedure and patient but for uncomplicated inguinal hernia surgery my instructions are no contact sports or lifting anything >10 lbs; no swimming or soaking in a bathtub for at least 2-6 weeks.
It depends on the type of repair that is performed. If an open repair is performed then I have my patients only walk for exercise for the first 6 weeks. For this reason, I perform robotic hernia repairs and that approach only requires 2 weeks out of the gym then gradually move back to normal workouts as you body allows.
