If it is a tooth color restoration, it gets set as soon as it is exposed to the special light that your dentist will use. Older restoration materials such as Amalgam (silver fillings) has an initial setting time of about an hour and it continues setting for 24 hours after placement.
Tooth colored fillings set immediately. Amalgam(silver) fillings take a couple of hours to set fully.
Silver filling take about 30 minutes to set. White fillings are good to go.

The modern composite fillings only take a few seconds to set.
Hope this helps you.
From 30 to 60 seconds for composites (white filling).
24 hours for silver restorations (amalgam filling). Tooth colored or composite set after light curing in the clinic, though they may shrink a bit after curing. Temporary fillings take about 30 mins to set.
White fillings will set right after the filling is finished. If amalgam filling it takes a couple of hours- many dentists do not recomment this any more because of mercury toxic issue,
Filling are cured with special light, after that they're set. But your bight sensitivity, that takes a couple of weeks to go away.
Bonded fillings set immediately. Silver amalgam fillings can take upwards of sixty minutes before they reach their full set.
New materials are cured using a light so they are set and done before you leave the chair.
Composite fillings gets set right away but amalgam or diver fillings take about an hour to fully set.
