There are many variables :
Depends on what procedures you had done ? was it localized or generalized ? was the surgeon rough or gentle ? can you normally handle some discomfort or are you usually sensitive ? Any underlying medical issues ? Are you a smoker ? Eating sensibly ( nothing too spicy or hard …) Hopefully you are taking some analgesics ( Advil, Tylenol every 4-6 hrs as necessary ) ice packs externally can help your symptoms & make you feel better. How long depends on the individual , everyones healing time varies . The mouth is very sensitive . Most of your healing should take place within a couple of weeks and gradually improved overtime . If it has been a while , you may need to see your dentist for additional care.

The first day is the worst, unfortunately. Pain is the body’s way of telling the brain 1. Something happened or is happening that can damage the body or 2. There is an infection. Either way, swelling is usually present and that swelling can cause pain as the sensory pain nerve fibers are stimulated. After the initial injury or trauma to the body, swelling can increase for the first 72 hours so some clinicians will say at least 3 days till the tissues stabilize. The true answer is way more complex than that just because of multiple factors. The general consensus is after day 3 it should be decreasing. Most clinicians give pain medication for 5 days, after that, if the pain levels are increasing or acute, the infection should be considered and that requires evaluation by your clinician.
I don't know what type of gum surgery you had (there are several), but generally, you will feel moderate discomfort for about 3 days. Research shows taking Tylenol plus Advil can offer as much pain relief as Percocet without the unwanted side effects. I would call your periodontist or the dentist who performed your surgery and let them know how you feeling. They can tell you the Tylenol-Advil protocol if it's appropriate for you based on your medical history, or prescribe something to get you comfortable. Hope you feel better.
