Just as the severity of a disc herniation can vary, so can the length of time needed to treat it. Some patients experience relief after 1 session, some it can take 6 or more.
Acupuncture sessions for disc herniations will vary depending on the severity of the condition & the patients response to the treatments. Acupuncture is safe and effective decreasing the symptoms of a herniated disc in the cervical, thoracic or lumbo- sacral areas. The recommended time to get treatment is 2 sessions per week for 3 months.
Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, the healing process varies depending upon the patients constitution, the severity of the condition, the frequency of visits, and if any lifestyle habits are contributing to the injury of the disc. If you do seek out acupuncture care, I would prepare for at least 15-20 consistent sessions of acupuncture to help heal the area. Im wishing you the best on your healing journey. Dr. Hallie OGorman
If you’re working with a practitioner who understands how to use electrical stimulation to nourish the blood flow along the spinal column, it can help almost immediately.

what a great question.
There are different triggers to disc herniation which will affect the speed of recovery.
When we are looking at the herniation in the discs, we need to take into consideration the following:
1. level of injury
2. type of work
3, age and physical strenght
4. diet
Typically we can make an improvement in 6-12 visits. You can expedite rests by doing chiropractic care simultaneously especially if the chiropractor has a decompression machine, which can work well in combination with acupuncture. Kathy Martin, MS.Ac. Beach Acupuncture
We start with 6 sessions at 2x a week for 3 weeks. Everyone responses differently to treatment but usually expect you to be 30-40% better by the 6th session. Then we will taper down to every other week, so on and so forth.

Acupuncture with massage and herbs can help you out gradually. You should get these modalities 2-3 times a week for 4-8 weeks in a row to take care of a disc hernia.
Acupuncture can help with the pain associated with disc herniation. I usually see reduction in pain after 2-4 visits with longer lasting reduction in pain after 6-8. Depending on the degree of herniation it may take longer to see lasting results. Your acupuncturist should be able to give you an estimate on how many how many treatments they recommend based on your condition at your first visit.
It varies by individual condition.
There is no set number of treatments for any issue. You'll want to discuss an approximate idea with your practitioner.
Across most types of pain, studies usually show results in an 8-10 treatment range.

Keep in mind, this is a statistical average; some patients required more than 10 sessions and some required fewer than 8. There's no way to predict in advance where you might end up.
Each patient is unique, as is each problem. I usually will try 4 treatments and evaluate how much they are helping.
