“How many times can a zirconia crown be replaced?”
I got a zirconia crown 5 years ago. How many times can a zirconia crown be replaced?

Hi! That really depends on how much natural tooth structure is left under the crown. As long as theres enough tooth structure to hold a new crown in place, then another new crown can be done. Some tooth structure has to be removed in order for a crown to me made and fit over the tooth in the first place. Another reason tooth structure can be missing is due to decay getting under the crown or a fracture/crack, etc. In my experience, I can usually replace a crown 2-4 times (totally random though and dependent on the situation and if we find the decay quick enough). Each crown should hopefully last 10-20 years, but this also varies widely depending on the patient takes care of the crown and, of course, how well it was done. Ive seen them last 40-50 years on patients who take care of them very well. Hope that helps! Dr. Matt Nordlie
Ideally a crown has a long shelf life. It can range from 2 years to 20 years. It all depends on patients home care, parafunctional habits, dietary habits. Secondly it depends on the structural integrity. Was it done correctly? The optimum thickness of the crown and type of material used. Usually most of insurance companies they cover a crown replacement in 5 years. Bottom line is we need to explore why the crown had to be replaced in 5 years. Hope it answers your question.
