Acupuncture can be used during pregnancy as often as it's required and as long as it is deemed safe by your primary care practitioner in your case. It's generally not recommended to start acupuncture during pregnancy if you weren't doing it prior to pregnancy since it moves a lot of qi and blood, and a pregnancy by definition contains energy that needs to stay in place and not move. Please set up an appointment to evaluate your specific situation.
That depends on the mother's health.
During the first trimester, it is common to have weekly acupuncture, to help treat a range of pregnancy discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, back pain, and headaches. Then once per month as maintenance. If your doctor gives you the ok, be sure to find a certified, and licensed acupuncturist, who is experienced in the protocols of treating pregnant women.
I recommend my pregnant patients continue acupuncture throughout their pregnancies. During the first trimester, I recommend weekly treatments to help support the pregnancy and to help manage morning sickness and fatigue. I recommend patients continue with treatments weekly or every two weeks through the second and third trimester to address any physical discomfort, like back pain and acid reflux, and to help the body prepare for birth and postpartum.
Depending on your symptoms, your acupuncturist could advise how often you should get treatments. Usually during the first trimester, we treat 1-2x/week depending on the severity of pregnancy symptoms. By second trimester, if all is well, we can space out treatments to every 2-4 weeks. At 32 weeks, we start providing weekly treatments to prepare the body for labor. If there are complications such as breech presentation, we could advise 2-3 times per week leading up to labor.

The frequency of acupuncture treatments will depend on the reason for the treatments. If it is related to pregnancy like a disharmony with the baby, always moving around, the treatments will depend on the response from both mommy and baby. If it is related to back pain/muscle aches/affecting mommy, the treatments may be as needed save the excluded caution/contraindicated acupuncture points. Unless these cautionary points are intended for the purpose of expediting the delivery of the baby due to prolonged carrying/labor, the
number of treatments will be minimal. Generally speaking, acupuncture sessions may be as often and needed as the condition requires. A general maintenance for acupuncture during
pregnancy may be but not limited to once a month. Definitely ask your primary and OB/GYN if alternative medicine would be beneficial, then check with your practitioner performing the acupuncture and make sure they know you are pregnant.

Having acupuncture during pregnancy has great benefits to both mother and baby. But most common reasons for mommy to get acupuncture is for morning sickness, lower back pain, sciatica, and helping induce labor. Depending on mother's conditions and the term, it could be once to twice a week until condition improved.
Thanks for your question. It is great that you considered doing Acupuncture your pregnancy. The frequency of Acupuncture during pregnancy depends on whats going on during the pregnancy. If you suffer from Morning sickness and the severity you may have 2-3 / week to quickly resolve the problem, however if you are doing well you can do 1-2/ month. The closer you get to delivery the treatment can be ramped up to 1 -2 / week again depending on what is being addressed. The bottom line is Acupuncture is safe and effective and will not harm you. Make sure to find a Licensed Acupuncture Physician in your area. I hope this answer your question. Have a great day! Stay blessed & Healthy! Dr. Rosemarie.
I would suggest coming in once per week to help maintain a healthy pregnancy. If there are specific symptoms that need to be addressed, it might be necessary to come in more frequently.

Once a week is good depending on the issue, could be more often
It depends on what you are using acupuncture for. If you have acute symptoms, then 1 to 2 times per week is helpful. If you are using it for health maintenance, then 1 time per month is wonderful.
Thank you for your question regarding frequency of visits.
Typically, weekly appointments are recommended for patients. Although frequency of visits depends on the health concern which is being addressed. It is best to speak with an acupuncturist to determine what treatment plan is best for your circumstances.

Once a week is average in pregnancy.
We often see pregnant patients during the first and third trimesters for morning sickness or lumbago.
One or two times per week.
Frequency of acupuncture treatment depends on what condition is being treated and is unaffected by pregnancy. That being said, if you are going to acupuncture to treat any symptoms of pregnancy (such as morning sickness or fatigue), I would recommend treatment once per week. If your symptoms are mild, you may be able to stretch that frequency to once every 2-3 weeks.
I see patients twice a week until their symptoms go down and stay down between treatments, then I go to once a week, and then every other week as symptoms require.
If you're looking at acupuncture to help manage things like first trimester nausea or low back pain in later trimesters, once a week should be sufficient.

For acupuncture during pregnancy it's very important that you see an actual board certified and state licensed acupuncturist rather than a chiropractor, PT, or physician who may be offering 'acupuncture-like' services under the scope of some other medical license. There are points which should be avoided in pregnancy and minimally trained providers often aren't aware of this fact.

You want a provider with either a Dipl Ac or a Dipl OM national board certification and an L.Ac. or R.Ac. state credential. For pregnancy issues, you may also want to seek out someone who has an ABORM (American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine) qualification. To find local L.Ac./R.Ac. you can use the 'Find a Practitioner' link at NCCAOM.org. To find an ABORM certified provider you can go to ABORM.org.
