Depends on the technique. Usually local anesthetic is given, so there is no pain. Please see below video:

During the deep cleaning procedure, we attempt to remove the subgingival calculus accumulations, This procedure must be done under local anesthesia. This way the patient would be comfortable and also we would be to do the deep cleaning properly without hurting the patient.
It isn’t. Usually you will be numb for the procedure.
They will give you a local anesthetic before starting so there will be no pain. Afterwards ,you may have some soreness for a few days but nothing intense.
The level of discomfort on deep cleaning depends on the type of 'deep cleaning", severity of case and patient perception. Some patients need local anesthesia for these procedures sometimes and then not other times.
Typically we use local anesthetic for root planing so there is no pain after the anesthetic is applied. The soreness afterwards is typically mild and easily addressed with ibuprofen or acetaminophen and warm salt water rinses. The gums heal quickly once the irritating tartar and toxic bacteria are removed from under the gums.
