Generally on a firm mattress on your back with a good cervical pillow. But if you sleep on your side, try to have someone look at you from behind to see if your spine is straight from your head down to your pelvis. That's how they determine your sleep number on the air mattresses.
Basically, you want to support your spine. If on your back, support the curve under your neck rather than letting your pillow push your head forward. Place something under your knees so they are bent. If you are a side sleeper, don't curl up into a ball. Match the top leg with the bottom leg, keep your top arm along your ribs, and raise your chin. Your neck should be in a straight line with the rest of your spine.
First, make sure you have a decent supporting mattress. Also, you need a pillow that supports your head and neck. I don't have one size fits all recommendation. You have to find what is comfortable for you. Sleeping on your back is best. Next, is on your side. You want the head, neck and shoulders to be close to in a line, when on your side. Avoid sleeping on your stomach.
