I can't poop?

Hello, I'm a 59 year old female with frequent constipation. I've been constipated for a month now. However, it's also been a recurring problem that has happen throughout the years. I haven't been able to have a normal bowel movement and, get relief. I'm only able to have small bunny poops and, sometimes they come out hard. Sometimes, I'll sit on the toilet for awhile and, still can't have a BM. It's very frustrating and, my stomach feels bloated. I usually feel sluggish and, have no energy. It also makes me feel irritable. I would like to know if it would be safe to take Fleet Liquid Glycerin Supposories like about 3 times a week? Do you think this would be good for me? I read the reviews for this product and, it seems good. Or, any other home treatment or, remedies.? What do you think and, what's your opinion? My constipation started late in life after the age 40.

I noticed my bowel movements started to totally change in the consistency, shape, and, size. Even the odor, too. From bigger healthy BM's to much smaller and, sometimes with a very stinky foul odor And, not going as often with everything slowing down. I felt I wasn't having normal complete BM's like before 40. I never had a problem with constipated when I was younger as a child, Or, in my 20's and, 30's. I was always very regular having healthy BM"s. I also wanted to mention colon cancer is in my family history. My Dad had colon cancer and, his Dad too (my grandfather). Do I have a higher risk of getting colon cancer? Since it's in my family. Do you think I need a colonoscopy?' I've never had that done. Do you think that I may have a more serious problem and, that I should really go and, see a doctor to be checked out? Of course, I just want to feel myself again and, feel better and, healthier. I've suffer with this problem for so long. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, very much.

There are many causes of chronic constipation. Evaluation by a gastroenterologist is important especially if you have never had a colonoscopy.
We always start with increasing water, fiber and aerobic activity.
Step two is an osmotic laxative like Miralax
Step three is a prescription like Amitiza, Linzess or Trulance
The suppositories are ok for occasional use.
Yes, of course, you should have a colonoscopy, forthwith. In addition, you may have more than simple constipation. Find a GI doctor who knows how to work up and diagnose a defecation disorder (also known as dyssynergia). A GI doctor who only wants to do your colonoscopy and brushes off your constipation, and doesn't know anything about defecation disorders, is not worth your time.
