One of life’s great mysteries. But we can speculate: streptococci can be spread by contact - a long shot. Viruses can be blown around, and even if you wore the typical mask, that is not not fully protective - and possibly other people in your environment did not. Lastly, food and drinks can be a source of viruses and bacteria - usually do not cause sore throats, but could. But this is football season, and maybe you yelled for your team too much?

Regarding viruses in upper airway infections, you can contract illness from ambient air and by touching items which others with URIs has touched. There are many more causations for sore throat symptoms than viruses, e.g. bacterial sinus and nasopharyngeal infections, acid reflux, ingestion of inflammatory food substances, smoke exposure, alcohol intake, dehydration. See ENT if not getting better in two days.

Thanks for the question.
Sore throat can be due to acid reflux from the stomach, food allergy, overuse of the larynx, post-nasal drip from sinus allergies, smoking and other irritants, and a few rare conditions. See your doctor if it persists more than a few days.
