I need more detailed information to answer your question. What is the level of pain in the knee? You have difficulty walking standing or squatting? Have you had x-rays done? Your knee may make noises but not necessarily is that bad.
You should see a physician and get an X-ray to assess any potential issues.

Most probably you have knee arthritis, which is very common in a 71 year old. Try taking Advil 600mg three times a day. If you don't feel better, see an orthopedic specialist.

Cracking or clicking in the knee can be from arthritis. Get it checked by your doctor.
