I need help staying hydrated?

I have MS-related dysphasia to liquids. I drink thickened water but still only get down about 50 - 60 ounces of fluid a day. Additionally, I am on HCTZ, as well as have diarrhea from minocycline that was prescribed for rosacea so I think I am probably losing more fluid than I am able to take in. The nearest hospital is 40 miles away and they are reporting that they are full due to the virus. I am alone and scared but don't know how to get help. Any suggestions?

There is no easy solution if you are unable to swallow liquids. If solids or semi-solids go down easier, then you can get extra fluid from moist foods such as fruits, vegetables, jello, Thick smoothies, ensure and the like might be okay, too. Make sure that the MS is being treated well. This will help muscular function of the esophagus. But in the worst case scenario, a feeding tube or TPN may be needed.
First of all, your hydration status is more important than taking HCTZ or Minocycline. (Stop them both.) Then, I would consider I.V. Hydration at a nearby Vitamin I.V. business or company. Maybe even a home health company.
You have described a problem related to hydration and dehydration and side effects of medication. You did not describe the underlying GI dysfunction which needs further evaluation and testing to see the exact extent of your complaint and your hydration status. I assume you have doctors who are prescribing your medication and they should be consulted for proper care. Calling your doctor doesn't require going to the hospital, unless you have dizziness, blackout spells or loss of consciousness. Do you have GI blockage? Have you had upper GI endoscopy. Water consumption is calculated by your body weight divided by 2. So, If you weigh 150 pounds, divide 150 by 2, you would drink 75 ounces of water a day. But you have more serious problems. You must get basic lab tests to your determine hydration status and kidney function. Please call your doctor, asap.
