“Is counseling effective for depression?”
I have depression and want to treat it. Is counseling effective for depression?

It truly depends upon the counselor. If you find a counselor who is skilled at working with depressed patients it can be very helpful. I would strongly encourage anyone who suffers from depression to read "The Depression Cure". Most people can decrease their depression by 80% by making positive lifestyle changes. If someone has depression along with a dual diagnosis, such as anxiety or PTSD, they would benefit by seeing a clinician that specializes in EMDR or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy CBT.
It absolutely can be. I would highly encourage you to reach out and talk to a local therapist if you are considering therapy for your depression.
Counseling can't hurt. Counseling only helps. How effective depends on the relationship we have with our therapist, the work we put in (how vulnerable and real we are with ourselves), and the intensity of the depression. If counseling only helps so much and we've been doing all the right things, we may need to consult a psychiatrist for medication. Talk to the therapist if this is the case and usually they have in network referrals.

Yes, there are many effective therapies to treat depression. Therapy for depression may focus on new ways of thinking or behaving to help improve your overall mindset and daily habits. If the depression is linked to earlier life events, sometimes it's helpful to have a safe and supportive space to process through those thoughts, memories and feelings to create meaning for your life ahead. Most people will experience depression at some point in their life, therapy is a very effective approach to keeping your mental wellness.
Everybody gets the blues from time to time, whether because of a setback – romantically, professionally, or personally – or sometimes for no apparent reason at all. This is normal and quite different from what mental health professionals mean when they say "depression." However, clinical depression is a serious problem, and you don't want to put off getting help if you need it.
Counseling is incredibly effective for depression. Cognitive behavioral therapy is ideal; it helps you learn how your thoughts, behaviors and feelings are all connected and you only have to make a change in one of those three and the other two shift automatically. CBT can help you learn how to recognize maladaptive thinking patterns that lead to depression, and how to challenge and reframe the thoughts.
Counseling can be an effective form of treatment when clients are motivated and invested to learn and practice new skills to help eliminate the depression.
