Deep cleaning can be done under local anesthesia or topical anesthesia. The anesthesia is frequently dependent on one's pocket depth, imflammation, and the presence of calculus under the gums.
Some deep cleanings can be performed under heavy topical application(without a needle) placed below the gumline. Some more advanced cases may be completed with local anesthesia which is more profound and lasts longer.
Most periodotists and hygienists can complete deep cleaning procedures with local anesthesia. You should call your dentist and make sure this is what he wants to do.
