Gum/Gingival surgery is a painless procedure due to local anesthetics. There may be some discomfort associated with the procedure. However, if tissue is removed, you may experience some mild to moderate discomfort following the procedure. Pain may occur following a periodontal surgery that involves the opening of a flap, gingival grafts, or gingivectomy/frenectomy procedures. Postoperative pain experienced within the first 3 days after surgery is considered normal and should progressively diminish throughout the healing phase. Postoperative pain can be the result of extensive and long surgical procedures; poor tissue handling, poor infection control, or poor knowledge of surgical anatomy.
Depends on what surgery you are having done... best to consult with the surgeon who is performing the surgery.
