Depending on the type of heel surgery and how involved it is, minor procedures on the heel may be performed under local anesthesia, where more involved procedures may require a general anesthetic, with or without a nerve block for pain control.
It depends on the details of the procedure. Most likely, we would give some sedation and the surgeon would administer local anesthesia. More significant surgery would require general anesthesia, spinal anesthesia or a popliteal nerve block.
This will depend on how extensive the procedure will be. I recommend you discuss with your surgeon the types of anesthesia available for your particular case.
Usually any foot or ankle surgery is performed under a combination of General anesthesia and local anesthesia. Sometimes under conscious sedation with local anesthesia. There are many factors that will be considered by your surgeon for planning of your surgery, including anesthesia. This should all be discussed with you pre-operatively
