Can you die from being put under anesthesia?

My 81 year old mother will have surgery under general anesthesia. Can you die from being put under anesthesia?

Less likely from my experience. I used to do complicated cases like heart transplant, lung, liver transplant, open heart surgeries, all kinds. I have few died on me, but all of them were known to die, none were a surprise like I had a patient clinically dead. I told the surgeon she answered she wants to know why he was dying, I knew, but I am not going to go into medical terminology and I had a patient with the aorta ruptured. The surgeon could not repair the tear he called, so your mother would be a piece of cake.
Death under anesthesia is not so common, but could happen.
Assuming she is relatively healthy—age is relatively less important than, say, uncontrolled heart disease, she should go fine. There are some studies suggesting short term memory effects if multiple snesyhegicsxare given over a short period of time.
