Dermatologist Questions Doctor

Is it safe to take these supplements?

I am currently taking biotin and collagen vitamins. These were not recommended by a doctor, but my doctor never had any objections to it when I told him. I am also on medication for hypothyroidism and anemia. My hair shedding is normal according to the doctor. I want to know if taking these supplements at first causes more shedding before helping with anything. And also, if I stop taking these, will my hair start shedding more?

Biotin and collagen are commonly used supplements for hair and skin health. However, it's important to note that individual responses may vary.

Regarding your question about shedding, some individuals may experience initial shedding when starting a new supplement or when discontinuing it. This is known as "shedding phase" and can occur due to various factors, including changes in nutrient levels.

If you have concerns about the potential effects of stopping these supplements, I would recommend discussing it with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific health condition and medication regimen.

Additionally, while these supplements may support overall hair health in some individuals, they may not be a cure-all for hair shedding or related conditions. It's always best to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and guidance on appropriate treatment options.
Looks like you need a new physician. See a dermatologist rule out any local condition. Supplements should be taken under guidance from your physician. Not that things cannot happen at age 18, you need full evaluation for your thyroid and anemia.
Your hair loss is most likely from Hypothyroidism. Continue to take Levothyroxine as ordered by your PCP. They will increase or decrease the dose as per thyroid profile blood work as needed. You can take vitamins and Biotin (usually for nails and hair) as there are no known side effects of those supplements. Then again there are not much researches done. Be careful. If you see any effects, stop the medications (supplements) and see your PCP.
Good luck.
See your dermatologist to determine which are the right supplements.
