Medication question

Hello. I was prescribed this medicine for a dry constant cough. I was originally supposed to get the “cough balls “ medicine but that doesn’t work for me. I was prescribed promethazine 6.25 mg/ 5 mL oral syrup. I just wanted to make sure that will help my cough. Everything I read it says more for motion sickness and that needed the codeine in it for cough which I don’t have.

Promethazine is used for motion sickness, but it's also used to treat things that cause coughing. By drying up secretions that cause cough (often referred to as "drainage"), the cough that drainage causes is relieved.

Promethazine is also good at blocking allergy symptoms, which can cause tickling and itching that lead to coughing even without drainage.

Codeine is used as a direct cough suppressant. There are more drawbacks to products containing codeine. If the promethazine isn't treating your cough, it would be best to consult with your primary care provider and request to proceed to the next steps in therapy.
