Metal Taste that Can be Cleared By Crying

I'm asking this on behalf of my mother who has been suffering with this condition for 47 years . (It started in her 20's after giving birth to my sister). Every day, multiple times, she will get this horrible metal taste in her mouth that makes food taste awful and makes her feel queasy. But she can clear it by making herself cry for a few minutes and her taste will return to normal until something triggers the reaction again.

It does seem to be a reaction of some kind, but she can't seem to narrow it down. Obvious triggers include smoke (cigarette or bonfire), fragrances, and certain chemicals in body products, oh and sometimes things she eats like certain nuts, or even fruits(mangos etc).

Does anyone know what this could be? And is there anything that could help?
