“Mixing xanax xr with xanax ir? ”
I was prescribed xanax xr 1mg once daily and xanax ir 0.5mg every 6 hours as needed. While on xanax xr if I start having anxiety I am supposed to take the xanax ir but when I do my anxiety gets much worse than better, while not xanax xr taking xanax ir it did not do this, I take my medicine as prescribed, and I need the relief. I have talked to pharmacists and doctors but have not got a solid answer to why this occurs, this is the only medicine that has ever shown promise in giving me the relief I am looking for insight on what is causing the anxiety to increase when the two are mixed as they are the same drug to my knowledge.

Okay, as someone that had severe anxiety for many years, GET OFF XANAX! Xanax is an awful drug and extremely addictive. Talk with your Dr. and ask them about trying a Beta Blocker and Klonipen. This combo should take care of a lot of your anxiety.

This is not a good long-term solution to your generalized anxiety. Therapy, lifestyle changes, and other forms of anxiotlytic medication are best practices. Benzodiazepines are best used for panic disorder and/or acute stress disorder.
Is your primary care doctor prescribing the meds or is a psychiatrist? If it is your primary care, have a referral to a psychiatrist who can speak to the issue.

I am not an expert in discussing the difference between these 2 different forms of Xanax. My recommendations with other forms of medication are to pay attention to negative effects and stop the medication that seems to create these effects.
Even though it’s not common but Benzodiazepine class of medications (Xanax is one of them) are known for causing paradoxical effects/reaction. The XR formulation is much better than IR formulation in general. Xanax IR also is quite addictive. You may want to talk to your doctor about alternative options for “as needed “use.
Alprazolam is a good medication for short-term use. Because of its addictive properties, it will become ineffective and the body requires more. Anxiety disorders should not be treated with long-term benzodiazepines. SSRIs or bupropion are effective for long term treatment. If you use Alprazolam long term, you'll end up with 2 problems: anxiety and addiction.
