Doctor Questions COVID-19

My aunt sleeps all day?

My aunt lost her 35 year old son a year ago, she was ok, about 5 months ago she got COVID-19. Ever since she has been sleeping all day and night, she will wake up and look at the person who is in the room with her at the time yell out the name says not to leave her, and goes back to sleep. This happens maybe once every hour. We have to wake her up and force her to eat. She is only 56 years old.

Sorry to learn about your aunt. It can be part of the bereavement process to sleep as a way to cope with the loss. She would benefit from talking with a therapist or attending a bereavement group. She needs understanding, support, and ways to gently tell her she deserves to take care of herself and her son would want her to do so. Start out with a few minutes in another room, and then sitting outside and being in nature when she's ready. I wonder about the Covid piece, might she have long Covid, need for much rest, much fatigue, need to pace one's activity, can all be symptoms, have her talk with her doctor about the possibility of long Covid, often most tests come back normal, yet the inflammation can cause chronic fatigue like symptoms and checking with her doctor would be wise in any regard. Important you are checking on her and my best to you. Dr. Bridgeman
appears to be a psychological problem not a sleep problem. Covid can have prolonged effect on the brain...brain fog.
Sounds like she is very depressed and COVID made things worse. Please see if you and your family can get her to a doctor for a psychiatric consult, intervention.
I am not a physician, but sounds like “long COVID” to me. Tests of the spinal fluid may reveal the source of this problem, and, hopefully lead to a treatment. Please consult a physician with COVID experience.

You need to get her to her PCP. Most likely severe depression. “When your parent dies, you lose your mortality. When your child dies, you lose your immortality.” That loss is profound. Also need to have PCP rule out possibility of underlying medical condition contributing to her current state.
