Good idea to stop smoking now. Tobacco smoke has thousands of toxic chemicals which can damage the lungs. But the chest pain is not likely to be from cancer. Usually it takes years of smoking to cause lung cancer. Less than 20% of people who smoke develop lung cancer. If the chest pain persists you should be evaluated for other things, like pneumonia, blood clots, collapsed lung or other causes.
