Shingles

For several days I felt like there should be a rash on my chest, but there was nothing. A rash (see pics) eventually appeared. It hurts when anything touches it - clothing, seat belt… The rash has been there 6 days now. Does this sound like shingles? And even if it is, is there any reason to be seen by a doctor at this point? Thanks!

Your symptoms—pain before a rash and sensitivity to touch—are common signs of shingles. It’s important to confirm the diagnosis, as early treatment with antiviral medication can reduce the severity and duration of symptoms.

Dr. Shafa at IrvineSkin in Irvine, Orange County, specializes in treating conditions like shingles. Even after 6 days, seeing a dermatologist can help manage your discomfort and prevent complications like long-term nerve pain. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Shafa to get the care you need.
Typically shingles will occur on one side of the body following a nerve root pattern. The pain and discomfort typically precedes the development of the rash which consists usually of grouped small blisters that may be blood-filled or crusted. Your picture is very blurry, hard to discern. Seeing your dermatologist as soon as possible to be examined and probably treated with the correct dosage of an antiviral medication like Famciclovir or Valcyclovir for 8-10 days will help to arrest the progression of the condition and hasten resolution; furthermore, it can prevent what is a common sequelae of long lasting post-herpetic neuralgia that could be painful for many months or longer. Yes, seek the advice of your dermatologist, and do not delay treatment if warranted.
