Should I have gum pain after getting a tooth pulled?

I had a tooth extracted last week and I'm still experiencing gum pain when I brush the neighboring teeth. Should I go back to the dentist? Will this go away?

Should go away, but you should get it checked.
Yes, that is possible.

It is normal to have some gum pain after the extraction.IT should go away on its own.
The degree of post op discomfort after a tooth extraction depends on multiple factors. The fact that you pointed out gum pain when brushing narrows it down some. If the procedure required opening of adjacent gum tissue to access bone for removal, your symptoms are well with in normal range of healing. If no tissue was manipulated, having some discomfort when brushing is also still within normal range. If the area does not seem to be continuously improving or gets worse, contact with your treating surgeon would be warranted.
Usually after a tooth extraction, the gum takes about 4-6 weeks to feel normal. The first 2 weeks, just take care of that area and baby it. There might be some sensitivity as the healing happens on the neighboring teeth. But if nothing major, then wait for 2 weeks after extraction and then see your dentist for a post-op.
Hope that helps.
