Dermatologist Questions Dermapathologist

Skin problem?

Hi. I have a question regarding my daughter's skin condition. She has developed red patches of skin and blisters on her cheek and around her nose and chin just a month ago and is still having some. She was seen by a doctor at a local hospital, who prescribed two creams mezoderm (clotrimazole) and gentamicin-akos (gentamicin), which made things far worse. So we stopped using them. At the pharmacy, I was advised to use ftorocort (also a cream with triamcinolone acetonide) for my daughter. It really helped take off the redness around her nose. But she still has that red patch on her cheek.

The lesion does look like a fungal infection (ringworm). The clotrimazole could have killed numerous fungi suddenly, causing an inflammatory reaction to their dead/dying parts. A dermatologist could confirm the diagnosis by examining skin scrapings from the lesion under a microscope. If fungal infection is confirmed, oral treatment by antifungal pills should be better tolerated.

Hi,

Your daughter definitely needs to be seen by a local dermatologist. A number of causes are possible, including a fungal infection ("ringworm").

I am so sorry, but I am having a hard time with the photos - they are small and blurry - however, I would be worried about tinea corporis here, especially if you have dogs at home or if she plays sports. The topical steroid would "make it better" only to make it worse thereafter. She should see a dermatologist for a clearer diagnosis. There are also apps for telederm out there where the image quality might be better.
Sorry I couldn't help more.

Warm Regards,
