Pediatrician Questions Pediatrician

Teen weight loss?

I am a teen girl, and I am 188.6 pounds and 5'11" tall. I am always feeling dissatisfied with my body, and nothing seems to work. I engage in sports year-round, and I follow a regular, average diet. I simply want to lose weight fast, and I am looking for an honest and specific response.

As a pediatrician that has been in practice for many years, I get this question and concern a lot. First of all, congratulations that you want to look and feel better about yourself. But you need to go about this in a healthy manner from both a physical and mental standpoint. I would start by speaking with a dietician to set a calorie goal for yourself based on your height, weight, and goals that provide adequate nutrition (vitamins, minerals, etc)  Next I would set a weight goal to attain, and after getting there trying to stay there. Third, I would talk to a trainer or someone who is trained to give good advice about how much exercise and what type of exercise to do in order to maintain a good, healthy weight.  And remember, there is a good weight for you to be at based on your own body type. Your plan moving forward will be unique to you, not to others. And others plans for diet and exercise may not be right for you. Lastly, please seek mental health counseling if you are feeling depressed, hopeless, or sad. As physicians, we need to ensure that not only do you have good physical health, but good mental health as well.
I understand your desire to lose weight. I find a diet high in protein and very low in carbs to be the best way to lose weight. I also recommend working with a physician in your area that specializes in weight loss and healthy eating. To find a physician in your area go to: https://obesitymedicine.org/find-obesity-treatment/

Be aware of all of the fad diets out there that restrict calories too much. The body does not do well on these and you will be more likely to put your weight back on, and then some.

I am a big fan of eating KETO. There are some good insights on the right kind of keto at: https://mariamindbodyhealth.com/

Good luck on your journey! If you do it right and with the right nutrition you will not only lose your percent body fat but be able to keep it off.
