Without hearing and examining him, this is a very difficult topic on which to speculate. Record this and bring this to a pediatric otolaryngologist for their expertise.
A noisy airway needs investigation. Obesity can be a cause. You should consult an ENT for office laryngoscopes, a simple and painless procedure.
He will need multiple studies including a fiberoptic laryngoscopy. Does he have the sound while sleeping? Does he snore? Is he overweight? Take him to a good Otolaryngologist, the sooner, the better.
Take him to ENT for upper airway exam.
You may need to see an otolaryngologist and have a direct laryngoscopy done, some noises from the throat may be related to the cartilages of the larynx and are probably of no major significance, but an MRI may be indicated to evaluate the larynx structure.
