Toe surgery gone wrong?

I had a toe shortened and removed, now 6 months later my toe is curving downward and won't lay flat like the rest of my toes. It's sticking up high and won't go down. He shortened it way too much and I believe he put the k wire in incorrectly for it to be sticking up this way. What should I do. The podiatrist said it's because of my genes how it healed and we can shorten another toe so its even. I mean really ridiculous answer. It's very uncomfortable and I don't want my other toe shortened now because of his mistake. I want this toe back to normal that he messed up. What should I do?

You have the right to go see another surgeon and get a second opinion.
Hi! Flail toe as you are describing is a common complication of hammertoe procedures. You would need an additional procedure to correct this or at least correct this as much as possible. If you feel that uncomfortable with your provider, I recommend another opinion in person.
Hello

It seems like it was shortened too much causing the dorsifkeion of the toe.

1. You can lengthen it again with surgery but that would require a bone
graft and a fusion of the toe so it would be longer but never bend.

2. You could try to lengthen the extensor tendon so it does not pull it up
so high

3. Physical therapy to help bring it down

Limited options though outside of surgery.

Hello, Thank you for your question. We have to evaluate you and take foot x-rays if needed.
I am sorry you are having a hard time. The result does not always mean something was done incorrectly. I recommend you get a 2nd opinion to see what options are available.
Hi. There are toe implants that may be able to solve your situation. Very hard to say if you would achieve the results you’re looking for. I would recommend second opinion.
You should see a different surgeon and get a second opinion. You will likely need to have revisional surgery to correct the issue. This, unfortunately, is not completely uncommon for digital/hammer toe surgery
I would recommend that you get a second opinion.
Without a picture, x-rays and exam it is hard for me to say for sure. Without all of those things, I don't think I would try and do anything to the other toes. I would seek another opinion as to what is wrong with the toe, is it fused in the wrong position, there are screws that can be used to straight the toe and there are ways to get some length with a bone graft, but it would likely need to be done sooner than later. It is also possible that the extensor tendon leading to the toe is too tight and can be cut or lengthened to bring the toe back down. Have another podiatrist or two take a look your issue and then see what they say. If you are in my area I would be glad to see what can be done. Get your medical records and pre and post surgery x-rays to take with you to the doctors. I feel confident something can be done to fix or definitely improve your condition. Good luck.
Consult another Podiatrist. It can't go back to the way it was.
