OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions OB-GYN

Was this a normal period or a miscarriage?

I have been on birth control for about 3 months now and I have only missed a day once, about a month ago. I have been bleeding for the last week, even though this week isn’t my period week according to my birth control (Lo Loestren Fe), and cramping which I haven’t had issues with since starting my birth control. I used the restroom today and when I wiped there was a glob, probably about the size of an oval penny that looked like the inside of an oyster, and there was little to no blood on it. I don’t know what it is, I’m scared it was a miscarriage somehow (I am sexually active) and I would very much like to know what’s going on.

It is very unlikely that was a miscarriage, it sounds like you may have had some cervical mucus mixed with blood, a miscarriage would not look just like a blob, it would be accompanied by heavy bleeding in most cases. You may want to consider talking about the breakthrough bleeding with your provider – missing even one dose can cause breakthrough bleeding when you’re on a low dose of a birth control pill like you are, so try to take it at the same time every day.
It could be a decidual cast ( lining of the uterus) if you miss a pill that can start your cycle early & may continue to bleed until the end of the cycle. I would get a pregnancy test to be sure. You may need a physician consult if this continues.
