Typically a general anesthetic with a breathing tube and anesthetic gas.

It depends on the type of ear surgery. For ear tube placement, anesthetic gases are used since the procedure is so short, approximately 15 minutes. For most other ear surgeries, anesthetic gases or intravenous anesthesia can be used. Ask your surgeon to get the contact for the anesthesiologists he/she works with and you can discuss the anesthetic techniques with them.
