I have been diagnosed with asthma. What are the different types of inhalers, and how do they work?

I am sorry about your diagnosis but this is a very treatable disease that can be controlled well by a knowledgeable physician. This is a very complicated questions that requires a lot of time and this is not the appropriate forum to address it. Beta receptor , short ,longer acting beta 2 . Acetyl choline ( vagally induced) bronchoconstriction blocked ( exercise induced ). Cromolyn may work for the latter ..
