“What are the first signs of gingivitis?”
I am a 27 year old woman and I maintain good oral hygiene. However, I have recently been noticing a faint film depositing around my teeth. Is it a sign of gingivitis?

You may need to change home care techniques
The film is plaque. talk to your hygienist/dentist about it, they can help you.
gingivitis is the inflammation of the gum. Bleeding on probing is the sign.

That’s typically not a gingivitis concern. It may be that you're using a mouthwash that has alcohol in it and that it may be too strong or you're using it too often. Hard to tell without an exam.

Great question since 75% of the adult population experiences gingivits. The clinical signs are swollen red bleeding gums that are tender.
Plaque forms around your teeth every 12 hours. When your teeth are dry, you notice this more. Drink plenty of water, stay hydrated and maintain good oral hygiene like you already are :-)
Gingivitis (when your gums bleed) is an early sign of gum disease. Unfortunately, many people do not find out how severe the disease is until the bone loss is progressive because there is minimal discomfort. This silent disease leads to requiring tooth removal if the disease is not corrected early enough.
Also, a white film around your teeth is not normal and should be evaluated by a dentist or periodontist. White around the base of teeth may be calculus which is a mineral deposit that bacteria live in. The waste products that bacteria create will dissolve teeth causing cavities and bone loss. To prevent the embarrassment of losing teeth, it is recommended to have a thorough periodontal exam at least annually.

First signs of gingivitis is inflamed gums and bleeding gums. You need to see your dentist or ideally a periodontist in order to correctly diagnose your problem.
Gingivitis is swelling and/or bleeding. The film forming on the tooth surface is biofilm (bacterial do-do) that forms on everything wet (like your teeth). Biofilm stinks (like do-do), infects the gum tissue, caused gemlike swelling and bone loss, and, eventually, tooth loss.

The faint film around the teeth could be bacterial plaque. If left around the teeth long enough it will contribute to gingivitis. Gingivitis is a red inflamed reaction of the gums to the bacterial plaque.
