I don't believe there are any long term side effects they are aware of. However, it can cause drowsiness and dizziness and increase your risk of falls.
Probably not an issue. More likely than not you will develop a resistance and it simply will stop working. Please discuss options with you physician.
I believe that taking one 25 mg diphenhydramine (Benadryl) daily is safe. Most people take it in the evening because it usually causes drowsiness.

The main problem is rebound congestion. It could also eventually cause kidney and blood pressure problems.
