The treatment for heart palpitations varies considerably depending on the cause and associated symptoms. While most patients associate palpitations with a heart problem, diagnoses relating to anxiety are common with treatment focused on the anxiety. Determining if palpitations are due to a heart issue is done by looking at the results of an EKG, a rhythm strip, or by connecting a continuous heart monitor that can be stationary (ex: in a hospital) or mobile (ex: holter monitor). Emergent treatment with intravenous medications and/or by initiating an external electrical shock is considered when the patient's vital signs are unstable or there are other indications that the patient is in critical condition. Several different classes of heart pills are used to treat less emergent causes of palpitations.
