Thanks for asking: a simple CBC (complete blood count) will identify anemia and its extent. additional indices (also a simple blood draw, no additional vial needed) will also hint at the cause of anemia. additional tests will be needed to know more.in principle there are (but many more in detail) causes 1. not enough production (for example insufficient vitamins, and many other causes); 2. blood loss (e.g. bleeding - even subtle - in the GI or GU tract and others), and 3. destruction of red blood cells (e.g. autoimmune; or infections and other causes).each of these underlying mechanisms might have several other causes!!!! so if anemia is present, talk to your physician to identify the cause and treat it accordingly
Complete blood count (CBC): Reports white blood cell count, red blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, platelet count and more info on the cell lines. If a differential is ran with the CBC, it will break down the proportions of the type of white blood cells that make up the total.
