We need more information to make a determination. There are different types of impingement. Would like to know if any imaging has been performed. Often time rest and physical therapy resolve the issue. Sometimes injections are needed
Shoulder impingment is when the supraspinatus tendon hit the "roof" of the acromion and is limited. It can be limited by the position of the arm bone (humerus) in the joint and can also be because the acromion process of the shoulder angles downward. Both can be helped by posture of the shoulder which requires particular exercises that can be taught by a knowlegable provider in orthopedics, chiropractic or physical therapy.
Shoulder impingement is very common as people age. Most cases of impingement in the shoulder can be treated non-operatively. Physical therapy and home exercises to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder, improve posture, and improve shoulder Range of motion are the backbone of non-operative treatment. Sometimes Cortizone injections and anti-inflammatories over their short course can help as well.
