My eyes are red and irritated. What can be the cause? Should I see a doctor?

See your optometrist to rule our infections or dryness. That doctor usually will make recommendations
If you have a red, irritated eye, please see an optometrist right away--to ensure you aren't trying to manage an infection or something worse. Artificial tears (NOT Visine or ClearEyes) may help temporarily
One cause of irritated red eyes can be dryness. It would be safe to use non-preserved artificial tears bought OTC. The eyes can also be red and irritated from allergies. Pataday drops over the counter twice a day may work. If eyes are irritated after a day or 2 of conservative treatment you would need to see an eye care professional. If vision is decreased along with the irritation you need to be checked by an eye doctor to be properly diagnosed and treated.
