Many different things can cause ankle pain. It could be as simple as tendinitis, inflammation of the joint capsule or it could be arthritis. I would recommend evaluation by a specialist. Jonathan M. Kletz, DPM Texas Foot WorksDallas, Athens and Gun Barrel City Texas214-340-8885

This can be caused by overuse and poor bio mechanics of the lower extremity. I recommend you make an appointment with a foot and ankle surgeon (podiatrist) for evaluation and treatment options.
Possibly tendon stress,or arthritis
You do not need to have trauma to have an injury. Some injuries are 'over-use' injuries. Also, if you have mechanical dysfunction of your feet and ankles, you also may have issues related to tendons, ligaments, bones, and joints. It is in your best interest to seek the attention of a specialist who can evaluate what is wrong with your ankle and help you to treat and alleviate the pain.
Believe it or not, lots of conditions causes pain, tendonitis, inflammation, shoe gear, job, activities, change of seasonal activitis, etc... list goes on, so if needed, please see a doctor on your pain issue.
