Can be many factors
There are two types of astigmatism: external (corneal) and internal( lenticular). External astigmatism can worsen from the degenerative or inflammatory disease of the cornea, the front of the eye. Internal astigmatism can worsen from cataracts.
Nothing, astigmatism is a stable refractive error. which stays forever without treatment.
